Steel Drum Workshop for Year 4
Event held on : Monday, November 16, 2009

On 16th November, steel drums rang out around DESS as Year 4 classes were treated to workshops led by Terry Noel from the UK.  The drums have been purchased from Trinidad by the schools PTA to help provide opportunities for the pupils to develop their musical skills by playing in an ensemble.  Terry Noel is the leader of the award winning BT Melodians Steel Orchestra in London who have performed all over the world, including at Buckingham Palace!    The students at DESS had a wonderful day learning Pachalbels Canon and hope to carry on learning in the music deparment so that their own steel band will emerge for concerts in the future.

Swimming Gala week
Event held on : Sunday, November 15, 2009

DESS Inter House Swimming Galas held this week.

This week has seen every year group from Reception to Y 6 involved in swimming their best for their House team in a series of competitive swimming Galas. The galas were well supported by parents and family who joined in the cheering and ?Mexican waves? with alacrity and a sense of fun.

The children certainly enjoyed the galas and thanks must go to not only the PE Department for organizing these highly successful events but also all staff who acted as team managers for the children during the competitions.

Congratulations goes to Neptune who were the overall winners of the annual Gala house Trophy for 2009 - 2010

Year 6 Camp
Event held on : Thursday, November 12, 2009

As the lights went down over DESS last week, the Year 6 children gathered on the school playing field in anticipation of their school camp. Tents were pitched, sleeping bags were unfurled as the children made ready for the night. The children had already worked together in order to complete obstacle courses on the playing field and orienteering exercises on the Corniche.

The evening?s entertainment was led by Miss Smith (our music teacher), who, along with the Year 6 teachers, children and other staff volunteers, sang songs in the glow of the campfire.

As the children retired to their tents, secretly uncovering the goodies packed for their midnight feasts, one sleepy voice uttered, I really enjoyed Mountain Day, didn?t you?
